Composite Manufacturing and Engineering Online CERT

There is a major industry-wide emphasis on composites manufacturing. In composite materials, there is a critical link between their processing and performance, and design rules for composite materials are fundamentally different than traditional materials. The engineer tailors the material structure at the micro- and nano-scales to achieve the desired mechanical and physical properties; this micro-scale structure is formed during the manufacturing process. Our certificate program is closely aligned with the College of Engineering’s strategic manufacturing research and education initiatives. The new online certificate program will extend the reach of the department’s signature education and research programs in composite materials and the focus on manufacturing aligns the college with the national emphasis on manufacturing.

Railroad Engineering Online CERT

Railroad activity in the United States is flourishing, with expansion across the industry – in freight, passenger (inter-urban and commuter), transit, and emerging high-speed rail. With increased activity comes the need for highly trained professionals to ensure operating safety, efficiency, and cost-effective use of resources. Yet many of the most experienced engineers and supervisors are retiring, leaving a gap in knowledge, experience and capability. This certificate program can help fill that need, as indicated by a market research study conducted in 2013 by the Education Advisory Board, which noted that “Completion of several courses in railroad engineering adequately prepares students to compete for employment in the rail transportation industry.” This graduate certificate is also designed for engineering professionals working in the area of railroad engineering or for those desiring to expand their knowledge of railroad engineering and related engineering disciplines, to thereby become viable candidates for advancement in the railroad industry.

The certificate program courses are all transferable into a graduate program in civil engineering or mechanical engineering.

Socially Responsible & Sustainable Apparel Business Online CERT

The graduate certificate provides a foundation of knowledge needed to manage design, product development, buying, promotion, sourcing, and production of apparel, textiles, and footwear in ways that are socially responsible and sustainable. The competencies and skills embedded in the courses are based on research with industry leaders and professionals who lead nongovernmental organizations and civil society groups with a stake in the global apparel business. The coursework is grounded on principles of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, a voluntary international initiative bringing together companies, labor and civil society groups, and various UN agencies in support of human rights, labor, and the environment. The following learning goals have been established for students completing the certificate: 1) Evaluate how apparel, textile, and footwear businesses address the “Global Compact” principles for human rights, labor standards, and environmental stewardship and how they can more effectively address them in the future, 2) Analyze the moral and ethical responsibility of business and individuals toward human rights labor standards, and environmental stewardship, and 3) Recommend various strategies for affecting change in the industries.
